Online Retailers Continue to Outperform UK High Street

The IMRG/Capgemini index (which tracks ‘online sales’), has revealed that there was a 15% rise in online sales in March 2010, compared to the same period last year.

This 15% increase translates to hundreds of millions of pounds in an industry worth billions of pounds annually. Shoppers spent a total of £4.5bn online in March 2010, £73 for every person living in the UK!

The IMRG/Capgemini index confirms that online retailers are faring far better than the rest of the retail sector during the recovery from the recession. Tina Spooner, Director of Information at IMRG said, “With recent research suggesting that over half of consumers believe the economy is now recovering from the recession, it is evident that e-retailers have already started to benefit from an increase in consumer spending."

Cameron McLean, general manager for merchant services at PayPal UK said, “PayPal’s own research shows that consumer spending online has increased over the last few months…Young people in particular have increased their online spend with 37 per cent treating themselves more now than 6 months ago. Overall it proves that online sales are going to be crucial for the retail sector as it emerges from the recession and returns to growth.”
