Results for April show that Google Chrome was fastest growing web browser for fifth month running, despite Microsoft Internet Explorers dominant market position. Web giant Google looks poised to engage Microsoft in pitched battle in a bid to grapple browser-market dominance from its rival over the next couple of years.
Microsoft Internet Explorer is still comfortable, holding over 59% of the market but it’s position is being eroded slowly but surely, having fallen almost 10% in the last year alone. And it isn’t just losing market share to Google Chrome. Smaller browsers are snapping at Microsoft’s heels. The second largest browser, Firefox is up 2% over 12 months, and Apple Safari and Opera are both up 0.7% last month alone.
Google Chrome is, in its infancy, doing remarkably well, with uptake being particularly strong among tech-savvy internet users, who are usually early adopters of new products and software. They are also the first to flee if it isn’t up to scratch. Chrome’s steady growth is a ringing endorsement from users that aren’t sentimental about browser choice.
